Blade Runner 2049

The original Ridley Scott Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen, despite its many flaws. The story it tries to tell is compelling, and the way Mr. Scott tries to tell it is even more compelling. I also absolutely love Philip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.”  The book that originated this story tells a story that is, while very different, is even more compelling. But once again, I love the way the story is told. It asks compelling questions, makes you think about them, and then refuses to answer them in a satisfactory … Read more…

White Nationalists are Wrong About the Civil War

When the chaos in Charlottesville happened a few weeks ago, like many around America, I was pissed off. Sure, I am a white male, so I’m not going to be as pissed off as someone who gets unfortunately lumped into one of the unfortunate categories that we seem to call “other.” But the idea that these feelings, this hatred, is still going on is insane to me, and I would imagine, many white people across the country. Many around the country and the world blame Trump for this sudden uptick of activity. Sure, maybe his blustering idiocy has somehow provided … Read more…

I Liked Mass Effect Andromeda

Is that enough of an inflammatory click-bait headline for you? If it is, good, because you’re the kind of person I want to be talking to right now See, I finished Mass Effect Andromeda last week. And I liked Mass Effect Andromeda. Sure, there were some annoying parts, a bunch of fech-questy shit I ended up ignoring as I got tired of it, and no I didn’t gather every mineral. But I’ve grown to accept that these things are a part of RPG games these days and are a part of Mass Effect games in general. Every single ME game … Read more…

I Don’t Understand the Hate for Ghost in the Shell

Over this past weekend, I finally dragged myself out of the cave I’ve been hiding in since November and saw Ghost in the Shell. I’ve only seen bits and pieces of the anime (which is a shame, I know), but I generally liked what I saw of the anime and I also love Cyberpunk. You’d think this would be a perfect movie for me, right? Well, I lagged a bit in seeing it because of the insane amount of hate it’s been getting online as well as by critics. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes has an accumulated critic score of just 46%, … Read more…

Rogue One – The Spoiler-Free Review

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is probably the most anticipated movie release of 2016, a year which saw the release of Marvel’s Civil War and Doctor Strange movies, both of DC’s attempts to build their new DC Universe, and the highly-anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo. But of course it’s highly-anticipated, it’s Star Wars, right? Except that this movie holds the future of Star Wars beyond episode 9 on it’s shoulders, being the first of many expected standalone films. No matter how good the movie was, it was going to be successful. It was going to open about as well … Read more…

Dealing with Donald Trump

The 24% of America that voted Donald Trump for president have probably been silently celebrating to themselves this week, because the rest of the country that didn’t vote for him are livid. And to be honest, they should be celebrating. Despite all odds, despite the collective power of “the machine,” and despite a media empire that all rallied around the idea that Donald Trump was a temporal blip that would be cast out when election came, Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s change candidate, the political outside, has been elected to the office of the president. What’s even more stunning, to … Read more…

X-Men: Apocalypse – My Spoilery Reasons For Liking It

The latest entry in Fox’s superhero reboot debuted to an audience, and critical reception, that has recently seen the best and the worst of superhero movies within a few mere months. After the rollercoaster of emotions that was transitioning from Batman v. Superman to Civil War, it’s understandable that both critics and fans may be weary of yet another superhero movie produced by Not-Disney. And while it doesn’t reach the heights of the Russo brothers’ latest entry, it’s still eminently watchful, with a few caveats. The scene in which Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, and a Jubilee who still has nothing … Read more…

THE ANIMANIACS ARE ON NETFLIX!!!!

Guys, it’s finally happened. After years of trying to scrape by with either trying to find video copies, or giving up and torrenting episodes, it’s finally on Netflix. Animaniacs is on Netflix. In case you thought you had anything better to do, you now don’t. Hell, it’s Animaniacs, you can probably do your important stuff while the show is playing in the background. It doesn’t matter. It beckons to you. It calls for your love and attention. Remember the greatness of The Animaniacs. I’ll be impressed if you can resist it. Sure, there are much more important things going on … Read more…

Rogue One Trailer: What Does It All Mean?!

Rogue One is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, especially since J.J. nailed the execution of Episode 7. Personally, I’m more excited about this movie than I was about The Force Awakens. Yeah, Ep 7 was going to continue the Skywalker story and introduce a new era of Star Wars, but it was going to be a typical fun space opera romp. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the movie was, but I still hold a lot of respect for what Gareth Edwards is doing with Rogue One. For those who don’t know, this movie … Read more…

Why Apple Opposing FBI Request is Not About Privacy

On Friday, Apple legally declared their intent to fight the court order to weaken security on an iPhone 5C involved with the San Bernardino attack. It’s not a surprise as Apple has been quite vocal about it’s opposition to the FBI’s request, but now the legal fight is official, and the media circus is truly about to begin. Over the past week, tech media outlets took this news story under it wings, declaring their support of Apple’s defiance with near unanimous acceptance. Yet, I feel like it’s all for the wrong reasons. During this last week, there has been an … Read more…
